Kindergarten News Welcome to Kindergarten! Our manatee kindergarten students have been working very hard thus far! Parents, please use the following tips to help your child succeed to their fullest this year:
• Read each night with your child. Discuss story elements such as characters, setting, plot, beginning, middle, and end of story.
• Log each book that you read on your Reading Across Broward forms. Be excited about this with your child! Your enthusiasm for reading will spread!
• Play games with letters such as naming objects that begin with each letter of the alphabet.
• Look through magazines and find pictures of things that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Make an alphabet book with these pictures.
• Pick out a vocabulary word from a book that you are reading. Talk about what it means and try to use that word again that week.
• Use the Home School Connection sheets for Reading and Math to discuss important concepts and vocabulary words that are being taught in the classroom.
• Ask your child about their day. Use leading questions such as, "What story did you hear today?" or "What area of the classroom did you visit today?"
Fourth Grade This year your child will be learning how to write narrative and expository pieces. Currently, we are studying EXPOSITORY writing. This is where students write to explain something to their reader.
To assist your child, remind them to follow the 4 paragraph expository structure. This includes:
• Focus Statement. This is the introductory paragraph where students establish the topic and briefly list their two main ideas.
• Main Idea #1. In this paragraph, students will explain their first reason, in depth. Try to include two anecdotes. Anecdotes are brief stories that exemplify or further prove their reason.
• Main Idea #2. In this paragraph, students will explain their second reason, in depth. Try to include two anecdotes that further prove their second reason.
• Conclusion. This is a closing paragraph that reminds the reader of the topic and two main ideas.
***Hint: When planning, make sure that the main ideas are different. This will enable students to write more about each.
Fifth Grade The fifth grade teachers are proud to announce an exciting Social Studies component, entitled Junior Achievement, which we will be participating in this year. Objectives of this program will focus on financial literacy, economics, and free enterprise. The core curriculum is incorporated through reading, writing and math. This knowledge will be “put to the test” on Monday, January 6, when we travel to JABizTown, located at the North Campus of Broward College in Ft. Lauderdale, for our cumulating activity. If you are interested in volunteering for this field trip, or any other field trip, please click here for clearance. Your child’s teacher will contact parents who have been cleared through this site to attend.
